More
You can visit Porvenir's online School, a medium for students in Porvenir to tell the world about themselves, their community and their new use of solar power.
Background
The goal of this Village Power 2000 project is to provide electricity and an Internet connection to a school in deep rural Porvenir, Bolivia. Porvenir is a village of 600 indigenous people living in the Amazon rainforest. Services are limited -- a diesel generator provides electricity sporadically, there is one satellite telephone and there is a small village school. The school provides education to grade 6. Geographically isolated, youth do not travel to another village or town to continue their education beyond grade 6.
The partnership to bring solar electric energy and the internet to Porvenir was initiated by American Electric Power (AEP). With the Nature Conservancy and Fundación Amigos de Naturaleza (FAN) de Bolivia, AEP is working with communities adjacent to the Parque Nacional Noel Kempff Mercado, one of the world's largest national parks, established in 1990 thanks to the efforts of this partnership. SolarQuest and ICORE are working with the partnership to bring enhanced educational services to Porvenir.
Participating Schools
Your school can also participate in the "Village Schoolhouse" sponsored by SolarQuest® by registering your school.
Photovoltaic Solar Energy
System
Overview of Photovoltaic Solar Energy System
AEP has developed Datapult, a system that will extract energy usage data from Porvenir. Their computer will look for a file to appear and then it will automatically send that file across the internet to AEP's computer in Roanoke, VA. The data will then be placed on the DataPult web server for viewing in Porvenir, using their solar-powered computer connected to the internet by satellite. It will also be available worldwide on the internet for other interested parties. Due to technical difficulties, the data is not yet available. Please stay tuned for developments.
